What do you do?
“I’m a composer and sound designer. I work on feature films, short films, adverts, theatre and corporate projects. I’ve worked for lots of different people including Screen Yorkshire, the UK Film Council, and the BBC.”
What made you contact Inspiral?
“I went to an Inspiral event at Plug a few years ago where they explained exactly what they did and how it was relevant to people like me. I’d known about Inspiral previous to that but I’d always thought that, because I wasn’t a company, they wouldn’t be able to help.”
What help has Inspiral given you?
“One of their consultants, Roo Pigott, gave me some brilliant advice. I had some music on telly but I didn’t know much about copyright and royalties. He’s helped me claim back quite a lot of money.
He’s also made the business side of music a lot clearer to me; about licensing music instead of selling it outright and being able to keep that other source of revenue. It has made me change the way I deal with clients in the way that I’ve worded things.
I also had a session with an accountant, who is actually my accountant now. That was really useful because he told me what I needed to do and, more importantly, what I didn’t need to do which has allowed me the time to concentrate on what I want to be doing.”
How has Inspiral’s help impacted on your business?
“It’s made it more business-like. It’s made me think how to run it realistically rather than keeping my fingers crossed. Rather than me hoping that the work will come in next month, I’m now booked up for the next six months.”
What advice would you give to someone looking to start their own business?
“Go and talk to Inspiral. For the business side of things, they can tell you what is out there, rather than you trying to work it out on your own.”
